Save Claude conversations to Obsidian automatically

Claude is where a lot of careful writing happens. The vault is where the rest of your notes already live.

The short version

Each Claude chat becomes one Markdown file in your vault. Project chats go under claude/projects/, and an edit you made to the note is kept beside the incoming copy.

Why Obsidian is a good home for Claude chats

A Claude thread is often the real draft: the brief, the objections, the rewrite. Leaving it in the sidebar means the work is tied to one login. Obsidian stores notes as plain files. You can search them offline, link them to a project note, and back them up with the rest of the vault.

You do not need Obsidian for the files to be useful. They are Markdown. Obsidian is simply the app that already knows how to search, link and graph a folder of notes. If you point a saver at the vault, the chats show up beside the notes you wrote yourself.

One Markdown file per chat keeps a long project thread searchable beside the notes you wrote yourself. Chatlog updates the file as the conversation grows and keeps your edits if a later save would replace them.

What a saved Claude note looks like

A saved chat is one Markdown file. The top of the file is a short header: the source, the title, the dates, and how many messages were captured. The body is the conversation, with each turn labeled.

---
type: conversation
source: claude
title: "Review my cover letter"
tags: [capture/claude]
created: 2026-03-15T09:12:00Z
message_count: 2
---

**You**

Review this cover letter.

**Claude**

The opening is clear. The second paragraph...

That shape is deliberate. A notes app can show the title. A search for a phrase you remember finds the file. The link back to the original chat is in the file, so you can reopen it on the site when you still have access.

Projects and artifacts

Claude project chats are not dumped into one flat list. They are filed under a project folder, claude/projects/, using the project name. Available artifact source is saved under claude/artifacts/ when enabled. Full interactive previews are not preserved. The conversation and the code you asked for stay in the same place.

Images are included when Claude gives a direct link to the file, up to 8 MB. If a link is not available, the image is not invented and the note says so. Anything on the page that cannot be read is marked "Not saved" inside the note, instead of disappearing quietly.

Set it up in three steps

Chatlog saves new Claude activity from Chrome while the browser is open. Pick a folder, connect Claude, allow claude.ai access, then refresh the Claude tab. With automatic saving enabled, new and continued conversations are captured. To save one open chat, choose Save conversation in the popup.

The same file is updated as the chat grows. If you have edited the note, Chatlog keeps your version and writes the incoming text as a separate copy, with ".incoming" in the name. Your edits are not overwritten.

Chatlog does not scan your Claude account history. To bring in older chats, get Claude's official export and import its ZIP or JSON file in Chatlog settings. Existing notes stay in your folder.

The trial is 14 days and does not ask for a card. New chats save during the trial with no limit. Pulling in older chats is limited to 25 unique chats per provider. Conversations are written to your folder. They are not uploaded to a Chatlog server.
